Definitely definitely going to REI and trying a bunch on is the way to do it. (At least, that's how I found out I have some sort of gnomish torso that is grossly out of proportion to the rest of me). Not sure I can make a shopping trip, but they are super helpful there. And, depending on what "affordable" means to you, you can always go try stuff on there, then take a look on ebay or something.
